Landon

Kline and I slowly made our way through the trees. I remained on alert for any hint of the creature that had gotten too close to the pack as I led us straight ahead until I caught the scent. We were extremely careful to watch where we stepped, to avoid making unnecessary sounds.

I was glad Raven had chosen Kline to join me. He was one of the better scouts. I almost wondered if he was the best.

Deep within the trees, an unnatural chill settled on the air and dug deep beneath my fur grabbing a hold of my bones. The shadows grew thicker as we prowled deeper into the woods. The moon, although full, didn’t shine through the trees as well as it normally would. The canopy was too cluttered, and what little breeze that moved between the trees did little to allow more light in, which was especially unsettling.

My nerves were on edge. I sensed danger was drawing near. Judging by Kline’s hackles and hunched shoulders, he felt the same thing. He sniffed the ground and snapped his head up to look around long enough to get an idea of the surroundings before returning to sniffing the dirt. My own shoulders were tense, and my tail was stiff behind me. Whatever was out here, it wasn’t good.

I sniffed the air again and shook my head as the foul scent entered my nose. Copper, tangy, sweet on the end. I recognized the scent well. It was blood. And a lot of it. Too much for just a single kill. The thought did little to curb the tension rising through me. The other thing that added to my nervousness was the complete and utter silence that surrounded us. Not even a whisper of a sound fell on my ears. It was unnatural.

The woods and everything within it was eerily silent as we made our way through them, searching for the source of the sound that alerted me and Raven to danger. The birds sat silently in their perches high up on the branches. I felt their eyes on us, warily watching as we passed underneath them while they remained safely out of reach. Some smaller creatures scurried away when we drew too close to them for their comfort, even still, their movements barely made a sound. Some remained cowered deep within their burrows, fear kicking up their heartbeats, as they too watched us pass by them. I knew better than to believe their fear was due to me and Kline alone. Their fear had to do with whatever caused the sheer, unsettling quiet that filled the air.

Not even the leaves rustled as a gentle breeze whispered through.

Whatever caused such a deep silence was the sort of danger that helped give the woods around us the legends humans liked to cling to. The danger and high risk of death. Though most of us shifters relied on these stories as a means of protection, not many of the legends had any real ground to stand on.
